We first encounter Jackson Lamb’s shabby domain through the eyes of River Cartwright, a young eager beaver who’s been transferred because he spectacularly blew a training exercise and shut down Kings Cross station. Everyone at Slough House except Lamb dreams of getting back to Regent’s Park, the glitteringly modern headquarters of MI5, although none of the “slow horses,” as they’re nicknamed by their fellow spies, has ever managed it. Getting to Aldersgate street near Barbican station, one can already recognize the show’s central setting. The exact location where the Slough House MI5 offices are depicted as being located is 126 Aldersgate Street, Barbican.

Lamb instead leaves Katinsky with one bullet left in his revolver, and Katinsky kills himself. Thinking about a unique angle to spy novel writing, he came up with the concept of the “Slough Hous”e novels. He started thinking about how would it be if the bigwigs at MI5 decided not to fire any of the screwed-up agents. He got his start when he published “Down Cemetery Road,” his debut novel that would spawn the highly popular “Oxford” series of novels. Chernitsky ambushes Ho on the train but, after Dander boards the train and helps fight him, Chernitsky escapes. Lamb calls Katinsky, deducing that he is the supposedly fictional Russian spymaster "Alexander Popov". Katinsky reveals that outside of his part in the Glasshouse plot, he also intended to kill Lamb in retribution for Charles Partner, his mole at MI5. Lamb, already aware of this, had notified David that he was another potential target due to his complicity in Partner's death.
Britain's MI5 Spy Agency Proves More Comic Than Tragic In 'Slough House'
Yet even as HQ tries to keep the slow horses hidden away, they somehow always wind up in the middle of the action. The spy writer most attuned to our delirious moment is Mick Herron, a British novelist whose funny, brilliantly-plotted Slough House books are currently being turned into an Apple TV+ series starring Gary Oldman. They follow the adventures of a group of maladroit MI5 agents who've somehow blown it — you know, left a disk marked "Top Secret" on the Underground, or slept with an ambassador's spouse. Right from the first book, Herron shows he’s not afraid to kill off his creations and some of those deaths hit very hard indeed.
Another thread in the novel has to do with a man named Spider Webb. However, all of them just want to be back in the main action and would do anything to get back in the good books of their superiors at Regent Park. The hopeless employees are not allowed at the headquarters of MI5, even though much of the organization was moved from Regent’s Park. Herron’s journey towards becoming an acclaimed novelist writing thriller and mystery fiction began with a simple idea. After graduating with a degree in English Literature, she would work as a sub-editor for several years. Since he lived in Oxford at the time, he used to commute to London five days a week, even though he still found time to write at least 350 words every day.
Things are made all the worse by the miserable and slightly sadistic Slough House overlord, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), who makes it his personal mission to ensure every ounce of happiness is sucked out of his underlings. Despite the show’s ample dark and dry British humor, there are a few touches that feel authentic to real life.
